My fondness for Lake Trout grows with every hookset. These majestic old fish are a blast to deal with on ice and can provide one of the best fights you’ll find on an ice rod.
I’m often asked about my Laker rod setup. Lately I’m hooked on this one combo that I love to battle the “Lak” on. It’s a 32 inch MH rod, Shimano Sahara 500 sized reel spooled with 10 lb Power Pro Ice-Tec. I tie a 4 foot 12 lb test Fluro lead attached via a high quality swivel. I prefer the somewhat lighter action rod to provide some “give” to the fish, especially when they get near the hole.
Bait wise I use a few different options. 3 and 4 inch Swimbaits have been great but sometimes the good ol’ jigging spoon gets em going.
I haven’t been out as much as I’d like (mainly due to weather) but every time out some quality fish has come topside.
They say Spring is coming……a few more weeks on ice chasing Greys then the Lund will start it’s pursuit of these awesome fish.
