Crappie Winter….in a good way!

It’s been a brutal winter in Eastern Ontario, confirmed as the coldest winter in 20 years to hit our area.  Great for ice making as we were on ice earlier than ever so that was a bonus, then the snow came and made mobility a chore.  Just a tough deal.

I love my evening trips out on the local lakes in search of good ol’ papermouths.  The bite was good early on with some nice fish coming topside.

I’m a creature of habit, sometimes to a fault.  Most Crappie I’ve iced this winter has come on an HT Tungsten Marmooska tipped with either maggots or a chunk of crawler.  I experimented with some plastics and nothing beats the real thing in our area as these fish are never really aggressive.  Why change what’s been successful?  A quality jig that gets bit belongs on the end of your line.

Always had a crew with me to help with the search…

The “search” has been extensive.  Finding them in new areas is like winning the lottery when it comes to ice fishing.  Their nomadic nature is annoying and interesting all wrapped into one.  We’ve iced fish in as little water as 6 feet all the way to 54 feet.

Thought I had finally found that magical 15 inch mark.  Nope……close.

With winter hanging on in the area much longer than we all hoped, it’s time to get out the lanterns and work over those Crappie hotspots.  They’re about to get riled up and we plan to be there when they do!
