Long weekend rundown…….

One would think that having 3 full days off to fish would be a great thing.  Usually it is but when Mother Nature unleashes her fury it can be challenging.
Saturday buddy Rob joined me on Muskrat Lake for Lake Trout.  When I pulled out of the laneway I knew it was going to be UGLY out there.  A text message sent to my partner sending a warning of what we could be arriving to at the lake.  We decided to continue on and at least make an attempt.  When we arrived at the lake we couldn’t see 100 yards out onto the lake with blowing snow.  We trudged on.  Once setup, we had to deal with the lack of snow making it nearly impossible to hold your portable shack in place.  The winds had to be reaching 80 clicks on the lake and we simply couldn’t take it anymore.  We left after two hours of nightmarish conditions.
Here is a short video I snapped to give you an idea! UGLY.
That evening I was invited to join an avid young angler out at his shack on my local lake.  We had a great night landing our share of Crappies while that same wind howled outside.  I hope to be joining him again real soon.
After taking Sunday off I joined an old buddy of mine Grant on a trip to the Quebec side.  Rob joined us this day as well.  Whitefish were our target.  Rob informed us he had never caught a Whitie or a Lake Trout through the ice for that matter.  I was pretty sure he’d get his Laker and was hopeful for a Whitie.
Lakers are out of season at this time of year on the lake, but since this was Rob’s first a quick photo was snapped as he pulled it from the hole.  It wouldn’t be the last laker we’d see on the day.  As much as we tried to avoid them they are just so aggressive you can’t help but catch them.
Shortly after that I lost a Whitie right in the hole.  I was less than impressed with that.  I dropped my jigging spoon back down to have it attacked.  I set the hook and the fish peeled about 50 feet of line off my reel in the blink of an eye.  This was no Whitefish.
After a strange fight to the surface I found out why.  Poor Bugger.
Despite changing baits 8 times I just couldn’t convince the tentative Whities to bite again.  Very frustrating to say the least.  I was pleasantly surprised to hear Rob yelling from his portable.  “Whitie!”
Mission Accomplished for Rob, his laker and his Whitie. Awesome.
The day ended with a great sunset on the long weekend.
