Pre-Storm Largies…..

Yesterday some last minute plans were made to get out for a late afternoon/evening fish.  I sent a text to my old reliable fishing buddy Phil and he jumped on the idea.  We dropped the Lund into one of the Rideau Lakes for an afternoon of beating the bank for Largies.

There was some recent discussion amongst a few of my fishin buddies about the old “rubber worm” and how no one seems to use them anymore!  Set the Hook designed a new worm for this season.  It is a GIANT worm!  At 12″ it’s quite the sight to see.

I rigged it with a 3/4 oz tungsten weight with a bobber stop.  For a hook, while I was in Bennetts I picked up a pack of 11/0 wide gaps for big baits.  It’s a big presentation!

I was surprised to see the number of two pounders that loved it!  They hit it head first and slammed it.  They beat it up.

We were beating bank and punching mat.  The fish were ultra shallow and often you’d see them fly out from under the mat to grab the bait.

The fun started around 6:30 when I received a text from Birdee.  “You better get off soon, huge storm!”  We didn’t even see it.  The pressure started to change and for that last hour it was game on.  We slid out onto a flat in 5 feet of water and hammered the largies.  Twice we had double headers!  The fish were on big time.

The approaching storm…

We pulled the chute around 7:30 and never did really get hit by the storm.  We seemed to follow it home.

Phil is always a blast to fish with, even though he was struggling with his aim a bit he sure was bang on with his jabs at me!  And yes you are welcome for the Doritos!

The two best from the evening.

For gear I was using my trusty ol Flippin stick.  Shimano Crucial 7’6″ teamed with a Shimano Core.  For line I was using 40 lb test Power Pro but next time I will bump it up to 65.  The tungsten weight is tough on the braid so 65 will help that.

Good Times!
