Springtime = Crappie Time!

The snow is gone, the fields are drying and the ice is gone.  It’s gametime!  While most wait around until walleye/pike open in early May I just can’t wait to get the boat out and wet a line.  Options of “in-season” fish are limited to panfish and course fish.
Crappie are one of my favorite to fish to target.  They can make you take that “drive of shame” home that you just couldn’t find em that day or they can make that drive home fly by as visions of deep fried crappie fillets await you when you get home.  To me there is no better fish to eat!
One of the best days Birdee and I have ever had on the water was a few years back when we took the kids out for an afternoon crappie fish.  The kids had a blast.

In Eastern Ontario a 14 inch crappie is the benchmark to me for a big fish.  Birdee has a few 14 plus to her credit,  including a 14.5 that our taxidermist did a fantastic job on.  I’ve spent alot more time on them and have my share of 14 plus fish as well.  Here’s one from last spring.

We run a real simple rig which I will feature in an entry sometime this week.  Anyone can set it up and go out and catch crappie.  Finding them is the only challenge.
It’s Crappie time! Get out there!
